Events to Expect: The Drop Comedy Club presents

For this “Events to Expect Wednesday” I wanted to bring my reader’s attention to one of my favorite past times, stand-up comedy.  While I have never performed myself, watching stand-up comedy brings together two of my favorite things to do; laughing and drinking. While most people assume you have to go all the way to Chicago for such entertainment, The Drop Comedy Club is aspiring to be the number one place to laugh in South Bend. The Club is located on the corner of Lafayette and Sample inside the Dew Drop Inn. It showcases some of the best comedic talent touring throughout the United States, as well as local up and comers vying for their shot at the big time.

The Drop Comedy Club hosts nights every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Tuesday is their FREE open mic night, to which a friend of mine recently attended and performed. He said he really liked the experience despite the five minute time slot. On Fridays and Saturdays they have their regular performers, as well as celebrity guests and one night event specials that are scheduled months in advance. I attended one of their regular nights a few months ago to see a friend of a friend Zach Boyce. About five comedians went up on stage that night from the area, and for a local comedy show it received some serious praise from the crowd. As for an event to expect, Adult Swim writer and “Best of the Fest” Aspen Comedy Festival winner Stewart Huff will be performing at the Club March 7th with a $10 admission.

Events to Expect Wednesday

In honor of a theme day I have decided that my theme for the week will be “Events to Expect Wednesday’s,” where I will mention up and coming events to keep an eye out for in the Michiana area. Growing up in the Midwest is no easy feat. Just ask Kanye West what the Midwest is, “Young and Restless.” One of the frequent complaint of Midwesterners, or at least those in the South Bend area, is that “there’s nothing to do.” Once again I’m here to break down predispositions and to prove to readers there are in fact things to do. For instance, did you know that you can find local events daily at DowntownSouthBend or at the South Bend Tribune online? This includes events going on all around the area! Another interesting read is Michiana Entertainer, and if you’re out at the bar long enough you might just find yourself in one of their monthly issues.

One upcoming event that everyone should be looking forward to is South Bend’s Official St. Patty’s Day Tent Party and Pub Tour on Friday March 14th. I’ve been to the last two and have yet to be disappointed. Admission is only $5 dollars, but they’ll try to get you to buy the “Green Room Package” for $20 which basically means an easier outlet to a bathroom, if you’re into that sort of thing. The best part of the event is the pub tour. Not only is the tent located near places like CJ’s Pub and Club Fever, but there are shuttle buses that do a route to other local pubs like Oyster Bar and Corby’s. Once you get your tent party gear, you get to ride the shuttle buses and enter participating bars for FREE!  There you have it, almost an entire month to prepare yourselves for green beer and good times.

One of the funniest/craziest things to ever have happened to me occurred on my first pub tour. During a taxi ride with a couple of my friends and some random female cohorts up to Brother's Bar and Grill from Corby's, a group of people hopped out in the middle of the road and began to argue. Our driver stopped in the middle of the road and watched them for a minute, all the while the rest of us were in the back very nonchalant and waiting to get to the bar. All of a sudden, our taxi driver gets OUT of the van and starts walking up to these people, yelling and swinging his arms for them to get out of the road. It was like watching someone herd barn animals or something! Mean while those of us left in the van were left astonished and in knots over the whole ordeal, confused but amazed that our driver was willing to do such a thing!

Another event to look forward to is the resurgence of NASCAR, with special guest this year Chris Evans Chris Evans a.k.a. ‘Captain America’ enlisted as NASCAR Daytona 500's Grand Marshal | TheCelebrityCafe.com

Visual is key

Before reading this blog follow the link and take a good look at the following building, located on Wayne St. in Downtown South Bend.
By the looks of this place you nor I would have any reason to believe that it is just another empty building in the downtown area. However, what if I told you that inside this unseemly building are pool tables, a dance floor w/DJ booth, and a giant Jenga set, would you believe me? Based on the outer décor, you’d sort of have to wouldn’t you? I assure you inside this plain face location Blarney Stone a.k.a Finny’s, a local pub in business since 2005.

Last Saturday a friend had asked me to come check out the place as part of a larger promotional scheme to get new business. After a few games of Jenga he asked me what I thought about the place, and if I could see it being a potential spot for fellow IUSB Titans. Overall I told him I liked the place, it is far bigger on the inside then what appears on the outside. The biggest obstacle I could foresee was a lack of visibility by passerby’s and aspiring patrons. I myself passed the place twice before I remembered where it was, and I have been there a handful of times. Point being, without the allure of a good time, places like Finny’s are likely to have a short crowd without proper advertisement. On a brighter note, my friend told me that the Blarney Stone plans to make Thursday’s a college night for IUSB students, with possible shuttle pick-ups and free cover, keep a lookout for fliers around school for details.

About this blog

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase, “Michiana nightlife?” Well if you’re from the Michiana area, you’re probably thinking…there, is no Michiana nightlife. For the unfamiliar, the Michiana area constitutes cities such as South Bend, Granger, and Mishawaka. It stretches as far south as Plymouth and all the way up north to Kalamazoo and Three Rivers. You mean to tell me, nay sayers, that there isn’t any sort of nightlife you can think of in the entire region just described? The point of this blog is to prove you wrong, and to share with fellow Michiana socialites my experiences from bars, nightclubs, and dancehalls all across the area.
In my experience, fun is where you make it. We have all been to places that didn’t have that particular vibe or awesome drink specials that allure us to our favorite destinations. Sometimes you get lucky; young crowd, good music, and great beer (Brother’s Bar & Grill, Oyster Bar, Bar Louie). Sometimes you find yourself in a place you wouldn’t expect to be fun, the place that people don’t talk about and you’re not always sure why (Peddlers, Bleacher’s The Bar, The View). You never really know until you try, which is why I’m making it my mission to try a different place every week. I will then report back here the kind of time I had, the people I met, the things I’ve seen etc. etc. In addition, I will be posting articles I’ve written for TheCelebrtiyCafe.com, and see if I can’t find a way to mix it organically. Feel free to leave your own experiences or recommendations for everyone else to see! Enjoy.
